new sofia

Sofia Coppola's latest flick The Bling Ring hits theaters this weekend and I (like most of the ladies I know) am excited to check it out.

..
I fell hard for The Virgin Suicides when I caught it in theaters back in high school (ouch, age). Talk about an awkward first date...

crossfire hurricane

Even the mildest of music fans at least "enjoys" The Rolling Stones. We were even fortunate enough to catch them in concert (with my parents, no doubt) a few years ago.

Debatably the best rock band ever, I'm embarrassed to say that I never really got that into them. Sure, I love "Ruby Tuesday" as much as the next person, but that's where my fascination ended.

All of that changed when S and I caught  the new documentary Crossfire Hurricane this weekend.

weekend come early

What's that you say? It's only Thursday? Well, that's okay by me.

After an insanely hectic few weeks, I'm cashing in some vacay time and starting this weekend early. Oh la la!

On the agenda? Sleeping late, getting a massage at this spa which boasts a rad star ceiling, spending time in the yard at the new house, visiting with pals B and R before catching a midnight showing of The Great Gatsby in 3D (insert over-the-top movie man voice here). I can hardly wait.

Setting aside Saturday afternoon to spend reading David Sedaris's new book Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls.

I've heard good things. To check out the always awesome Sedaris on NPR's Fresh Air a few weeks ago, click here.

golden gatsby

Madly in love with Loren Hope's Art Deco necklaces. Aren't they beautiful?

They lit the Rockefeller Center tree last night. Hope's designs remind me very much of the detailed architecture of the Rock Center office buildings (shout out, S & S!) with their decadent, shaped details and gold painted accents.

happy (anniversary) weekend

It's been five years since  I said "I do" to my most favorite person on the planet. My how time flies when you're having fun! It seems like I was just posting this on our fourth anniversary...

I caught the classic flick "Barefoot in the Park" a few days ago and couldn't help but be reminded of our first few years of marriage in New York. The endless walk up stairs, the freezing winters, the ridiculous spats, the make ups.

For our first anniversary here in Nashville, we kept things wonderfully simple. Between opening the restaurant and the move, simple and focused was just what the doctor ordered.

Here's a bit of celebration:

hanks cards

Best thank you note of all time? I think so.

Spotted on the wall at Mas Tacos this week. Thinking of buying a few of my own here.

P.S. How impossible is it to change channels once you've discovered Big is on? Silly string forever.

moonrise kingdom

We'd been in Nashville for less than 72 hours before we made our way to the historic Belcourt, ordered a glass of wine and caught Wes Anderson's latest release Moonrise Kingdom.

(illustrated movie poster available in Joe's Etsy shop)

I'll refrain from the obligatory post about how awesome the movie is except to say that it's adorable, hilarious and centered on the young love affair of Sam and Suzy. If you are a fan of Anderson flicks, I'd be surprised if Moonrise doesn't become one of your favorites.

Attention to detail is what we've come to expect from ol' Wes and he doesn't disappoint. Bruce Willis and Ed Nortion are also fantastic, but as Levar Burton would muse...don't take my word for it.

Let the always amazing (and slightly tipsy) Bill Murray fill you in.

taxi driver

How cool is this? Apparently De Niro was actually a licensed cab driver in real life...with a fancy hairstyle to boot!

Recently watched Taxi Driver again for the first time in years. It was the hubs's first viewing. All I can say is wow, Bob (De Niro), wow.

love is in the air

Happy Valentine's Day, darlings!

In honor of today, my very dashing (yet silly) sweetheart surprised me with the above treat. After all, nothing says "I love you" like a strawberry jelly-filled doughnut...especially when it's heart-shaped.

Here's a lovey dovey song from 2003's imitation rom com Down With Love to keep you in the mood.

the paris theater

For as long as we've been in NYC, I've wanted to catch a movie at the famed Paris Theater. Nestled next to the Plaza Hotel with its vintage-inspired sign, the Paris always seemed like such a "New York" sort of place.
Well, after years and years, we finally got around to paying the movie house a visit. We caught a showing of The Artist after work last night. Talk about a match made in Heaven!

Opened in 1948 (actress Marlene Dietrich cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony, by the by), the single screen theater definitely transports you to another time. It's cozy lobby features are mod with a dash of art deco.

Walk beyond the ticket booth and you'll find two levels. We settled in the balcony and got cozy with our popcorn.

The theater's single screen is obscured by a thick velvet curtain and jazz standards play until the show begins. In short, it was a bizarrely different experience from catching the latest Twilight at the multiplex (NOT that I'm knocking that, people)!

The experience was wonderful and the movie was GREAT. Click here for the trailer. It's got my vote for Best Picture.

P. S. I really want to learn to tap dance now.

P.P.S. I also now love the name "Peppy."

real human being

Finally caught Drive last night. After waiting for months for the movie to become available on Apple TV, we wasted no time in ordering it the moment it did.

This movie is nothing like I expected. It was better.

Of all the things haunting me about this flick (poor Joan!) the morning after, I must say the Goose's mask and the below song by College featuring Electric Youth are in a dead race for first place.

Pun intended.

roy

Thanks to a recent movie night where S and I watched David Lynch's Blue Velvet (whoa), my Spotify is quite content to play through Roy Orbison's songs.

As a youngster, I always liked his music, but as an adult I've grown to love it. From "In Dreams" to "Crying," his voice kills me.

Check out a few of my fave Orbison tunes here. By the by, "Oh, Pretty Woman" did not make the list.

moonrise kingdom

It's about time you returned to live action, Wes. We've missed you!

P.S. I love the dramatic song at the end of the trailer.

Did any of you Darcyheads notice it's the same song that Darcy and Elizabeth dance to in Joe Wright's 2005 Pride and Prejudice?

For my fellow trivia nerds, it's called "A Postcard to Henry Purcell."

buffalo gals

Happy Christmas Eve!

After a boisterous day of celebrating with aunts, uncles and cousins (oh my!), we are more than ready to cozy down with full bellies and enjoy the annual viewing of It's a Wonderful Life.

The above clip is from my favorite scene in the movie. Best part? The 2:48 mark to be exact. It never fails to make me smile when Jimmy Stewart sings "what did you wish for when you threwthatrooock?"

Hope Santa brings you something awesome.

weekend snaps

For the first time this holiday season, this weekend actually felt festive. Our friends A and L were in from Chicago and with much to celebrate. They just got engaged! Congrats, dears!

Here are a few snaps from a very happy weekend filled with good friends and good times. At last, I'm in a holiday frame of mind.

trimming the tree
a row of pretty vintage hand mirrors spotted at Stanton Social

S and my Christmas gift to each other arrived early-a beautiful painting by Baxter Knowlton (remember this post?)

fancy clementines on a dainty silver tray and a happy Christmas tree at our pals L & D's joint

a rad light up Ford sign at our fave dive bar Motor City

and last, but not least, ice cold milk and warm chocolate chip cookies enjoyed while watching Love Actually (you know it's good).

melanie laurent

How friggin' cool is French actress Melanie Laurent?

Such great style and that adorable accent. Are you kidding me?

She was wonderful as Shoshanna in Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards, but after seeing her this weekend in Mike Mills's Beginners-whoa. I have a girl crush!

Beginners is based on Mike Mills real life experiences with his father. It's a touching movie that moves slowly at times, but all in all, is pretty great.

In the movie, Melanie plays Ewan McGregor's love interest Anna and her quirkiness is quite sweet. Christopher Plummer is fab as well.

Check out the trailer below.

P.S. Are you guys over Ewan since his Moulin Rouge days? Yeah, me either. Swoon.

woody mix

*wit & delight is one of my most favorite blogs. From beautiful jewelry finds to hairstyles, home goods and super nifty animated recipe gifs, Kate has it going on.

Prime example? This rad Woody Allen mix composed of songs from his movie soundtracks.

I wonder if Kate was inspired by the latest episode of "American Masters" on PBS? They debuted a really good documentary on the director Sunday/Monday.*

get ready...

for a swinging holiday weekend!

It's a special, long, last bit-of-summer sort of weekend so please, whatever you do, get down.

Before things get going, take a gander at this awesome collection of photos of the terribly romantic Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

While I was down-and-out a few weeks ago following my wisdom tooth extraction we watched "The Long Hot Summer" starring the famous couple.

As the plot unfolds, the couple's chemistry was really fun to watch. Random factoid? The film is based on stories by William Faulkner.

taking off...

a little early this weekend.

By the by, I'm lately obsessed with getting an old 80's BMW just like the adventurous dame above.

SO very Blaine in Pretty in Pink...

Although, I've always been more of a Steph girl myself. Cad!

Here's to a bit of 80's nostalgia and a very happy weekend.

amadeus

Have you ever seen Amadeus? If not, I highly recommend you clear your schedule and check it out as soon as possible! If for no other reason, it's absolutely necessary that you subject yourself to Tom Hulce's (Mozart in the film) absurd, little giggle.

The movie, based on the play of the same name, tells the story of Mozart's rise and ultimate decline.

You can count on grand, sweeping musical sequences. You may also feast your eyes on the over-the-top period costuming with an 80's edge (the movie was made in 1984, after all). But, beyond all of these things, you will lose yourself in the amazingly written and awesomely acted story.

Check out the trailer below, and forgive the quality. This movie is from a time before some of us were even born.
