happy birthday, mister rogers

As a child, my Nana would ONLY let me watch PBS. This meant I spent a ton of time with Mister Rogers while my parents were at work. He was my absolute favorite.

When I heard of his passing in 2003, I was, like I'm sure a ton of kids from my generation were, really, really sad.

A few weeks ago the sweet doc "Mister Rogers and Me" caught my eye on PBS and it was wonderfully refreshing to learn more about the man behind the show. Fred was an unbelievably swell guy in real life as well. He spent his summers with family in a Nantucket cottage called "The Crooked House." He was also a vegetarian because he didn't want to "eat anything that had a mother."

jerry and tina

It's a yucky wintry week all over the country it seems. Let's take a break and enjoy a good laugh with Jerry and Tina shall we?

Last week's episode of Seinfeld's web series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" featured a rad, red 1967 Volvo. The guest? Tina Fey. They got coffee. They had Cronuts. They said funny things! Not a bad way to spend an afternoon!

GIRLS paper dolls

Is there anything worse than staying home sick on a Monday? Perhaps it's the nerd in me, but I really love the promise of a new week. Too bad the beginning of this week finds me couch surfing with a bottle of Nyquil, a binky and toasty puppy foot warmer.

In between naps, I used the time to catch up on GIRLS. Love it or hate it (I happen to love it...from the very first episode, by the by...), the show has been getting a ton of attention/praise/criticism.

Being a fan, I flipped for New York Mag's printable paper dolls of the Girls and the Guys of Girls. Pretty cute.

Here's a quick peek:

"among the pines"

How pretty is this tree pillow by OK Electric (spotted in Fine Little Day's shop)? I can almost smell the pine! It would make a cozy addition to the sofa this time of year.

The imagery makes me this of a recent excursion to the Pacific Northwest....and Twin Peaks!

I love Design*Sponge's "Living In..." series, and their post on the series from a few months back is one of my favorites.

Click here for all the details. Also, Agent Dale Cooper forever.

"zou bisou bisou"

Well, I can't say last night's Mad Men premiere left me disappointed! Today the world is all a flutter over Megan Draper's saucy interpretation of "Zou Bisou Bisou."

iTunes has released a single version of the song. For you hardcore Mad Men fans, a limited edition vinyl version is available here.

downton abbey season finale

After a busy week in Texas, I almost forgot that tonight is Downton Abbey's season finale. Are you guys as stoked as I am?

What about poor Bates? Will he be found innocent? Will Mary dump that grumpy geezer and make things right with Matthew? Will Thomas and O'Brien EVER STOP plotting and smoking?

Until this evening answers our burning questions, take a gander at this hilarious bit from SNL. The set-up? A Downton promo if the show were to air on cable channel Spike TV as opposed to PBS. Hilarious stuff, I tell you!

P.S. How hunky is Dan Stevens? Dapper blonde dude with a deep voice...just my style.

woody mix

*wit & delight is one of my most favorite blogs. From beautiful jewelry finds to hairstyles, home goods and super nifty animated recipe gifs, Kate has it going on.

Prime example? This rad Woody Allen mix composed of songs from his movie soundtracks.

I wonder if Kate was inspired by the latest episode of "American Masters" on PBS? They debuted a really good documentary on the director Sunday/Monday.*

retro table

Stumbled across this gorgeous 1960 retro dining table on Etsy this morning.

Typically, I gravitate toward a totally different aesthestic, but something about this piece's sleek modern lines and shiny wood top have me swooning.

In case I wasn't already missing Mad Men, this gorgeous vintage piece would feel right at home in the newly formed offices of Sterling, Cooper, Draper and Price.

As well it should...it originally lived in the Phillip Morris headquarters back in the day.

5 Ingredient Fix

Do you guys watch 5 Ingredient Fix on the Food Network? It's become one of my new favorites.

Since I'm never home when it's actually on, I had a bit of a mini-marathon on Saturday morning catching up on old DVR-ed episodes.

First and foremost host, Claire Robinson, a Memphis, Tennessee native turned New Yorker, is adorable.

Her simple dishes are perfect for whipping up after a busy day at work. They require a few ingredients (hence the show's name) and tend to be pretty simple to prepare.

She also stays true-to-her-roots by preparing a ton of Southern-inspired recipes from a much more hip, much less Paula Deen, perspective.

For example, how delicious does her Green Tomato and Vidalia Onion Gratin recipe look?

Tomato & Vidalia Onion Gratin

Ingredients

1/4 lb. bacon
1 cup fresh breadcrumbs
2 large Vidalia onions, peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch thick rounds
4 large green or firm under-ripe heirloom or beefsteak tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
6 oz. sharp white cheddar cheese, grated (about 1 1/2 cups)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Render bacon in a large skillet over medium heat. Remove the cooked bacon, along with 2 tablespoons of the bacon fat; pour the fat over the breadcrumbs and toss to coat.

Add the onion rounds to the skillet in batches and cook, without breaking the round slices apart, until there is some golden color, about 5 to 6 minutes per side.

To assemble the gratin, overlap the green tomato slices in one row in a large baking dish (9 x 11).

Next, make a row slightly overlapping of the partially cooked onion rounds, being careful to keep the slices intact.

Repeat steps until all tomatoes and onions are used; season tomatoes and onions heavily with pepper and lightly with salt.

Crumble the bacon over the vegetables; sprinkle the grated cheddar over the top followed by the breadcrumbs.

Bake for 30 to 45 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly; if the top is getting too brown, loosely cover with foil. (Yield 4-6 servings)

Perfect for warmer weather and perfectly Southern.

P.S. Claire has a really rocking cute pup named Newman.

larry

"I'm feeling pretty good. Pret-ty, pret-ty, pret-ty, pret-ty good."-Larry David

Do you ever feel like you're living in an episode of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm?

From overly agressive "bag bumper" on this morning's subway ride to an obnoxious work call where someone rings you then puts you on hold, I must admit I'm feeling a little like L.D. today...

On that note, here are two fav clips from the show to get us through this most annoying hump day.

Watch Larry open a package, and

go out for coffee.

Season 8, which debuts this year, takes place in New York. Score!

it's friday, people!

Feeling happy and romantical (much like the Ban.do model seen above) on this Friday afternoon. The sun is shining, and I'm looking forward to a happy weekend with my honey.

This girl is such a cutie. I wish I was cool enough to pull off her high bun and adorn it with a flower pom pom.

On that note, have a great weekend!

P.S. Anyone celebrating Valentine's Day early?

holiday time

As much as my mind still feels trapped in October, the holiday season is most definitely upon us!

Today I bought my first few gifts, and this evening is my company's annual holiday party which is being held in our offices. How Mad Men is that?

(image courtesy slant magazine and community)

Here's hoping for egg nog

and awkward singing/dancing with coworkers!

(images courtesy x-entertainment and jezebel)

Let the festivities begin!

P.S. Speaking of the office, here's a shot I snapped on my way home from work. The Rock Center Christmas Tree never fails to take my breath away.

Follow-up: For your viewing pleasure, a prom style, blurry Polaroid snapped on the 80's floor of our office party. The backdrop was a sign reading "Happy Bitchin' Holidays 1985." Stay classy!

20's chic

Have you guys been watching HBO's Boardwalk Empire? After a bit of a slow start, this show has gotten really good.

I'm loving the period piece costumes and the overall 20's vibe. Flapper chic, daddy!

This Coat of Arms Mirror seems like it would be the perfect place to pin curl your hair, no?

I'm loving the antique design of this mirror. I think this it would look perfect above our dark chest of drawers.

I'm pretty sure Mrs. Schroeder would agree.

pretties

Since it is Monday and we're all easing back into the work week, here are two pretty things to brighten your day!

First, Alexis Bittar's gorgeous gold/smoky quartz necklace from the Miss Havisham collection. How wonderful! Need this necklace in my life-ASAP.

Second, Scarlett Johansson's Marilyn-esque bob spotted on this week's SNL. How cute is she?

Happy Halloween weekend!

(from whence the sweet bird sang)

Happy Halloween weekend, everyone! Do you guys have any spooky, scary plans?

S and I are watching classic horror movies tonight. Here's hoping they don't give me nightmares.

I'm such a scaredy cat that I even get nervous during Hocus Pocus (and it's so not because of Bette Midler's buck teeth)!

Tomorrow some of our pals are having their annual costume party and we are all set to be...drumroll please...Sookie Stackhouse and Vampire Eric from HBO's True Blood!

Here's hoping we can top last year's Mad Men costume.

Hope everyone has a most wonderful, candy-filled weekend!!

gross man hair

The Fug Girls (of the hilarious site Go Fug Yourself: Because Ugly is the New Pretty) make an appearance in this week's New York Mag to discuss "the epidemic of masculine follicular follies" taking place during this fall season's movies and television shows.

This, obviously, makes me quite happy.

While the print version of the magazine features a really wonderful chart, here are a few highlights pulled from the magazine's website.

Let the nastiness begin.

Ed Norton in Stone

"We know Norton is a Serious Actor, and if his cheesy mullet-cornrows were integral to getting into character as a scary, manipulative arsonist, then we fully endorse that as a healthy alternative to going Method via torching somebody's barn. That being said, we firmly believe someone should have told him that he looks less like a bad-ass convict and more like K Fed — and even he hasn't been scary since 2006."

Zach Galifianakis in Due Date

"It's not like Galifianakis has ever touted his rusty locks as a modern-day rival to Fabio's. But in Due Date, they seem teased into an especially lively pubic shrub. Presumably he's playing it all for laughs, given two other stills featuring equally wacky dos — a driver's license picture that resembles the Heat Miser, and a black-and-white glamour shot that recalls Augustus Gloop — but it's no less disturbingly hypnotic."

Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Jack Goes Boating

"Remember when Phillip Seymour Hoffman showed up at the Oscars wearing a black stocking cap, and explained that it was because he had really, really bad hair for a movie role, and everyone scoffed, "How bad could it be, Phil?" This bad, which … wow. That cap was the right call, dude. Consider our scoffing officially retracted."

Jason Ritter in The Event

"The rumor mill suggests Ritter is a super-nice guy, and his Sean Walker is about the only rootable character on 24: Lost Edition. Sadly, we're not so much cheering for him to find his missing fiancée as we are for him to rob a drugstore for some shaving cream and a five-blade Gillette: All that carefully sparse facial hair does is make him look untrustworthy and wussy. Don't say he doesn't have the time amid surviving a plane crash, getting shot at, and being on the lam, because he somehow found a moment to put all that gel in his locks. Priorities, man."

"Call Me Al"

In the early days of VH1, I remember catching this video on the screen in my parents' bedroom. Thanks to my youth (and always gullible nature) I believed for a solid year afterward that Paul Simon was in fact Chevy Chase thanks to the hilarious lip-synching action below.

This song, and the entire Graceland album, are still wonderful.

"Call Me Al" makes me want to dance with a much shorter friend (you know who you are) while playing the trumpet.

"Good evening"

S and I having been watching Alfred Hitchcock Presents on Netflix instant stream for the past few months. For those of you who didn't catch its original run (1955-1965!?), I highly recommend.

Each half hour episode presents a teleplay focused on mystery, suspense and the general macabre Hithcock was known for creating in his sucessful films (though he only actually directed a handful of the series' episodes).

Each new story begins with an introduction from the man himself following his famous opening line: "Good evening."

Check out the title sequence and introduction for "A Bullet for Baldwin" below.
